Suvendu Adhikari Suspended From Bengal Assembly, Says CM Mamata In State Of Fear Psychosis

Kolkata: West Bengal Leader of Opposition and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Suvendu Adhikari has been suspended from the remainder of the session of the House that commenced on March 7.

“I am directed to state that on a motion adopted by the House on 28th March, you have been suspended from the service of the House for the remainder of the session which commenced on the 7th March, 2022,” reads the letter by West Bengal Assembly Secretary.

Adhikari took to Twitter and shared the letter issued by Bengal Assembly Secretary and said that there is an Emergency-like situation in the state.

“CM is in a state of fear psychosis as she’s facing constant & relentless opposition for the 1st time. Voice of the Opposition is being stifled,” he wrote.

Adhikari, along with BJP legislators Dipak Burman, Shankar Ghosh, Manoj Tigga and Narahari Mahato, were suspended by the Speaker for future sessions this year.

The suspension of BJP leaders came after the Budget Session of the West Bengal Assembly ended in an exchange of fisticuffs earlier this week after legislators of the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the BJP came to blows after heated arguments over the Birbhum killings.

The scuffle in the House prompted the speaker Biman Banerjee to suspend five saffron party MLAs, including Adhikari, who was also accused of busting the nose of a rival MLA.

During the session, BJP leaders plunged into pandemonium, demanding a statement by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee over the “worsening” law and order situation in the state.

Adhikari then walked out of the assembly, claiming that TMC MLAs roughed up party legislators.

“MLAs are not safe even inside the assembly… At least 8-10 of our legislators were beaten up, including Chief Whip Manoj Tigga, by some TMC MLAs, as we demanded that the CM make a statement in the House on the law and order issue,” Adhikari had said.

TMC MLA Asit Majumdar and BJP chief whip Manoj Tigga were reportedly injured in the melee and both were later taken to hospital. Majumdar claimed that Adhikari had punched him on the nose, but the BJP leader denied the charge.
