The first road bridge between Russia and China opened, know why it is important for both countries

Cross-Border Bridge: The first road bridge between Russia and China was inaugurated on Friday. Both countries hope that after the opening of this bridge, trade will get a further boost. The inauguration of this cross-border bridge comes at a time when Moscow is facing strict Western sanctions due to the attack on Ukraine.

This bridge is built on the Amur river

The brige connects the Russian city of Blagoveshchensk with the Chinese city of Heihe across the Amur River (known as Heilongjiang in China), the RIA news agency reported. The bridge is just one kilometer long and cost 19 billion rubles ($342 million).

Amid fireworks displays on Friday, cargo trucks from both ends crossed the two-lane brdge.

Russian officials hope to put bridges closer to both countries
Russian officials said the brige would bring Moscow and Beijing closer together by promoting trade. Earlier in February, a “no boundaries” partnership was announced by the two countries. The announcement came shortly before Putin sent Russian troops to Ukraine.

What did the Russian and Chinese leaders say,
“In today’s divided world, the Blagoveshchensk-Hehe bridge between Russia and China has a special symbolic meaning,” said Yuri Trutnev, the representative of the Kremlin in Russia’s Far East.

Chinese Vice Premier Hu Chunhua said at the inauguration that China wants to deepen practical cooperation with Russia in all fields.

Russian Transport Minister Vitaly Savelyev said the bridg would help boost bilateral annual trade for more than one million tonnes of cargo.

Inauguration delayed due to covid restrictions
BTS-MOST, the firm that built the bridg on the Russian side, said the construction of the bridg had been underway since 2016 and was completed in May 2020, but its inauguration was delayed due to COVID-19 restrictions.
