Sri Lanka Curfew: Along with the economic crisis in Sri Lanka, the period of political crisis is also going on. Ranil Wickramsinghe, who was the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka after President Gotabaya Rajapaksa left the country and fled to the Maldives, has been appointed as the acting President. Opposition refuses to accept Wickremesinghe as President
The country’s Leader of Opposition Sajith Premadasa said that the PM cannot exercise the powers of the President, and cannot declare a curfew or a state of emergency. Premadasa tweeted, “The Prime Minister becomes Acting President only if he is appointed by the President, or if the office of the President is vacant, or if the Chief Justice in consultation with the Speaker considers that the President is unable to act.” In another tweet, he said, “In the absence of any of these, the PM cannot exercise the powers of the President, and cannot declare a curfew or a state of emergency.”

New President to be elected on July 20

Sri Lanka’s Newswire reported, citing the speaker of the country’s parliament, that the President of Sri Lanka would tender his resignation today, while a new president would be elected on July 20.
